It's time. You are done struggling with these changes and ready to get support. Don't assume the doctor who delivered your baby 20 years ago is up to date on the latest in Menopause care. Follow these steps to find the best practitioner who is most up-to-date and has the time to listen.
Check your insurance-Ideally, using your health insurance and checking your coverage will be easiest on the pocketbook. What providers are “in-network” and how do the out-of-pocket costs compare with “out-of-network” providers?
Visit a Recommended Physicians List- I have created one for the Milwaukee/Chicago area https://drive.google.com/file/d/1oMlSmNXFUzXj29IidodCTxmzuw-w6llL/view?usp=share_link or check out Dr. Mary Claire Haver's list (https://thepauselife.com/pages/recommended-physicians). You can also visit the North American Menopause Society website’s Menopause Practitioner database to find a local provider. However, I have found this list may not be current.
Ask your girlfriends- Many people feel most comfortable visiting a physician who is recommended by someone they know. Ask friends, coworkers, and family if they would recommend their provider, or check in with local Facebook groups for some suggested local practitioners.
Go Online- Considering virtual menopause care may be the best option. Fortunately, telemedicine offers a convenient alternative to get the best and most up-to-date care. You can Google "menopause telemedicine" or explore MIDI and Alloy which come highly recommended.
Once you have made your appointment, start keeping track of your symptoms you have been noticing with this symptom tracker. Being prepared for your appointment will help you get the most out of your visit and you will be able to advocate for the care you deserve.
